1991 Special Edition (US)
1991 Special Edition (US) #182. British Racing Green. 1 of 4,000 produced. Rarity score: 24. Claimed.
The 1991 Special Edition represents Mazda's first special production Miata for the North American market. Limited to just 4,000 units in America, this edition featured a distinctive British Racing Green exterior paired with a tan leather interior, making it instantly recognizable among early NA Miatas.
The car has been tastefully upgraded while carefully preserving its original character. It had just 5,700 miles when it was most recently acquired in 2024, and every modification since has been selected with an emphasis on quality, period-correct aesthetics, and full reversibility. Suspension has been completely transformed with BC Racing DS Series coilovers (10k front / 8k rear), complemented by a genuine Mazdaspeed front strut tower bar and Cobalt rear chassis brace for improved chassis rigidity. A Hard Dog Hard Bar roll bar provides additional safety, while AWS front and rear tow hooks add both functionality and subtle period-correct motorsport styling. The car rides on Enkei92 15x7 +38 wheels, and the hood is supported by a Flyin' Miata gas lift kit for easier service. Exterior enhancements include genuine Mazda Eunos yellow fog lights, Jass Performance chrome side mirrors and aluminum scuttle panel, factory-style mud guards, and a custom radiator cooling panel. Lighting has been upgraded with Hella H4 headlights and LED bulbs throughout the remainder of the car. The windshield washer system has also been upgraded with classic Mini chrome washer nozzles, and a Moss Miata soft top window protector is included to help preserve the original plastic rear window. Inside, the cockpit retains its factory feel while benefiting from carefully selected upgrades. The instrument cluster features a one-off custom RevLimiter gauge face with Jass Performance glass gauge bezels and aluminum needle caps, complemented by RevLimiter chrome vent rings and I.L. Motorsport chrome interior door handles. A replacement Special Edition plaque has been installed, as the original was removed by the first owner before the car was sold. Unfortunately, the original factory radio had already been removed and lost before the car was most recently acquired. Under the hood, the engine bay has been subtly detailed with a painted valve cover, polished chrome heat shield, and custom green spark plug wires. The factory horn has also been upgraded to a louder replacement.
