Before Mazda settled into familiar production colors, it built six full-scale experiments for its California design team. Each 1990 Miata left the factory wearing a unique finish: raspberry, medium blue, metallic yellow, teal green, light green, or vivid orange. These were not quick resprays. Mazda painted the shells throughout, marked their window stickers "Various Test Colors," and assigned each an experimental X color code.

Three cars carried the A Package and three the B Package, all with air conditioning and otherwise standard first-year Miata mechanicals. After helping Mazda evaluate colors for future Miatas and MX-3s in Irvine, the six were sold into private hands. Their mix of factory provenance, one-of-one paint, and real product-development history makes each a particularly unusual survivor.
