The M2-1028 is what happened when Mazda's skunkworks turned the NA into a road-going club racer. Built around a "Street Competition" theme, the 300-car limited edition paired a five-speed manual with a modified 1.8-liter engine producing 140 PS at 6,500 rpm and 17.0 kg-m at 5,000 rpm. Revised pistons, camshafts, exhaust manifold, and engine computer delivered the extra urgency.
The rest of the car followed the same no-nonsense brief: an aluminum roll cage, lightweight bucket seats, Momo steering wheel, aluminum tower and brace bars, model-specific suspension, lightweight wheels and tires, and an aluminum ducktail trunk lid. M2 even deleted the conventional soft top and developed a lightweight hardtop, making the 1028 one of the purest factory expressions of the original Roadster.
