The Japan-only VR Limited offered two very different takes on a richly trimmed Roadster. Combination A paired Art Vin Red Mica with a tan soft top and taupe leather, while Combination B used Excellent Green Mica, a dark-green top, and black leather. Both carried embroidered Roadster seat logos. Mazda capped production at 700 Combination A cars and 800 Combination B cars.
Beneath the polished color combinations sat the later NA8C S-Special Type I specification: a 130 PS, 1,839 cc BP-ZE engine, five-speed manual, Bilstein dampers, front tower brace, Torsen limited-slip differential, 4.3 final drive, and 15-by-6-inch wheels with 195/50R15 tires. A four-spoke Momo wheel, aluminum shift and parking-brake controls, Roadster sill plates, stainless speaker grilles, headrest speakers, and an Eunos-branded shift surround gave the cabin just as much personality.
