Starlight Blue Mica made the 1996 M Edition the coolest-toned entry in the series, set off by a tan vinyl top and tan leather cabin. Mazda built 2,968, each riding on 15-inch five-spoke wheels with P195/50R15 tires and carrying subtle M Edition touches from blue seatback embroidery to script on the tachometer.
Nardi wood shift and parking-brake handles, branded sill plates and mats, air conditioning, Mazda Premium Sound with CD player, door tweeters and headrest speakers, and a port-installed alarm with remote keyless entry filled out the cabin. Owners also received an M Edition gift set containing a key fob, badge, and lapel pin. The 133-hp 1.8-liter engine and five-speed manual were standard; a four-speed automatic and removable hardtop were optional. Manual cars received a Torsen limited-slip differential and rear subframe bracing through the Popular Equipment Package. At $24,760, it was the most expensive NA Miata offered to that point.
