The final U.S. M Edition sent the NA series out in exclusive Marina Green Mica, a deep jewel-like green paired with a tan vinyl top and tan leather. Approximately 3,000 were built for 1997, distinguished by M Edition embroidery and highly polished six-spoke 15-inch wheels wrapped in P195/50R15 performance tires.
The cabin layered in a Nardi wood shift knob and parking-brake handle, branded sill plates, mats, seatbacks and tachometer, air conditioning, and Mazda Premium Sound with CD player and headrest speakers. Mazda also supplied a gift set with an M Edition pen, key fob, and lapel pin. Its 133-hp 1.8-liter engine came with a standard five-speed manual; a four-speed automatic, removable hardtop, and ABS were optional. Manual cars also included the Torsen limited-slip differential and rear subframe brace.
