Twilight Blue Mica over tan leather gave the 1997 STO, Mazda's "Special Touring Option," a relaxed grand-touring look all its own. The individually numbered U.S. run totaled 1,500 cars, each with a tan vinyl top, 15-inch five-spoke Enkei wheels, P195/50R15 Bridgestone tires, and a rear lip spoiler.
A Nardi leather shift knob on manual cars, stainless sill plates, STO floor mats, numbered dash plate, and Certificate of Authenticity gave owners the limited-run details that mattered. The STO used the 133-hp 1.8-liter engine with a standard five-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic. A CD player with headrest speakers, power windows, and power mirrors were included; air conditioning was optional. Unlike the more performance-focused packages, the STO omitted the Torsen limited-slip differential, ABS, and cruise control.
