Named for the Japanese idea of something fresh and new, the 2003 Shinsen Version gave the NB an unusually cool color palette. Titanium Grey Metallic paint met a dark-blue cloth top, matching blue bucket seats and door inserts, embroidered mats, aluminum interior accents, and 16-inch alloy wheels. Although Mazda announced 1,500, final documented production totaled 1,451.
It was not merely an appearance package: the 142-hp variable-valve-timing 1.8-liter engine came exclusively with a five-speed manual and Tochigi-Fuji limited-slip differential. A two-tone leather-wrapped shift knob added a final visual detail, while the Convenience Package supplied tweeters, power door locks, cruise control, and remote keyless entry.
