The 2004 Mazdaspeed was the first factory-turbocharged MX-5 sold in the United States, and the NB's quiet demeanor disappeared the moment boost arrived. Its turbocharged and intercooled 1.8-liter engine made 178 hp and 166 lb-ft, backed by a strengthened six-speed manual, heavy-duty clutch and driveshafts, and a Bosch torque-sensing limited-slip differential.

Known as “Crispeed.” Survived a house fire on 20 April 2021 and returned to the road quickly; afterward it added substantial street and drift-track use. Light turbo supporting mods include an MS3 ECU, 640 cc injectors, a larger intercooler, and a freer-flowing exhaust.
