The 2004 Mazdaspeed was the first factory-turbocharged MX-5 sold in the United States, and the NB's quiet demeanor disappeared the moment boost arrived. Its turbocharged and intercooled 1.8-liter engine made 178 hp and 166 lb-ft, backed by a strengthened six-speed manual, heavy-duty clutch and driveshafts, and a Bosch torque-sensing limited-slip differential.

Mazda tuned the rest of the car to keep up, fitting higher-rate springs, Bilstein dampers, larger stabilizer bars, a lower ride height, front shock-tower brace, 17-by-7-inch Racing Hart wheels, Toyo Proxes R28 tires, and standard ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution. The 4,000 U.S. cars came in Velocity Red Mica or Titanium Grey Metallic. Black-and-red cloth and a vinyl top were standard; the Grand Touring Package added black leather with red stitching and a black cloth top.
