The 2002 Special Edition came in two flavors with completely different personalities. Mazda built 1,000 extroverted Blazing Yellow Mica cars with black leather seats embroidered with the Miata logo, alongside 1,491 Titanium Grey Metallic cars with rich saddle-brown leather seating and door inserts. Both rode on 16-inch Enkei wheels.

Underneath the contrasting colors, both shared the enthusiast hardware: a 142-hp variable-valve-timing 1.8-liter engine, six-speed manual, and Torsen limited-slip differential. White gauges with aluminum rings, aluminum pedals and scuff plates, a chrome fuel door, Bose audio with an in-dash six-disc changer, edition badges, and unique keys completed the package. Titanium Grey cars added a two-tone Nardi steering wheel, Nardi leather shift knob, and matching handbrake lever.
