The 2005 Mazdaspeed carried the NB's turbocharged finale into a second year with the same 178-hp, 166-lb-ft punch. A strengthened six-speed manual, Bosch torque-sensing limited-slip differential, higher-rate springs, Bilstein dampers, larger stabilizer bars, lowered suspension, and ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution made it far more than an engine upgrade. Redesigned 17-by-7-inch Racing Hart wheels wore 205/40R17 Toyo Proxes R28 tires.

Velocity Red Mica and Titanium Grey Metallic returned, joined by Black Mica and the unforgettable Lava Orange Mica. Standard cars used black cloth seats, red-stitched controls, and a black vinyl top; the Grand Touring Package brought black leather and a black cloth top, while Lava Orange cars uniquely used silver stitching. U.S. production stopped at just 1,428, making the final Mazdaspeed year the scarcer of the two.
