The 2012 Special Edition gave the NC Miata a sharper, more assertive character. Velocity Red or Crystal White Pearl bodywork contrasted with North America's first factory black Power Retractable Hard Top, joined by black mirrors, grille detailing, and 17-inch Black Gunmetal wheels. Inside, heated black leather with grey stitching and piano-black trim continued the theme without overwhelming the Miata's simple cockpit.
Only 450 reached the United States, each based on the Grand Touring and powered by Mazda's 2.0-liter MZR four-cylinder. Six-speed manual cars added Bilstein dampers, sport suspension, and a limited-slip differential, while a paddle-shift six-speed automatic was also available. Its blacked-out appearance proved influential enough to foreshadow the regular-production Club trim introduced for 2013.
